The scrapping of Liverpool’s #163;350 million secondary school building programme will cost the equivalent of more than 1,000 full-time jobs, it has been claimed.

Liverpool City Council accused Education Secretary Michael Gove of “abandoning” plans for 26 schools to be rebuilt or modernised under Building Schools for the Future (BSF).

An estimated 1,000 full-time equivalent construction jobs would have been created by the schemes, plus a further 320 full-time equivalent posts in a Local Education Partnership (LEP) that would have delivered it.

Council leader Joe Anderson said: “It is not just our children’s education that is being put at risk, there is a huge knock-on effect for the local economy.” PA.
