Local authority helps poor pupils

A local authority is to offer its own financial support package for pupils who would have been eligible for the education maintenance allowance (EMA), which was scrapped in England. Tower Hamlets Council has created the Mayor’s Education Award, worth pound;400 a year for pupils from low-income families who have lived in the borough for at least three years.
