HALTON JUNIOR CITIZENSHIP PROJECT. Institute for Citizenship. For details fax 0171 486 9212 or e-mail icscitizen.org.uk
The Institute for Citizenship has a particular interest in raising the level of democratic awareness among young people and this is aimed at engaging children’s interest in their community.
While it sets a good deal of the work in one location (the project is being reworked to reflect schools nationally), it nonetheless serves as a useful model for others who want to create their own programmes around this important dimension of citizenship education. It also touches briefly on issues such as Parliament, human rights and European and global citizenship.
The materials include a booklet of illustrated worksheets which on completion form part of a personal “Young Citizen’s File”. The language seems a little stilted in places, but there is a useful glossary. This is an attractive pack combining information with pupil engagement and should appeal to upper-junior teachers.
