When introducing Sheila Semple, director of Enterprising Careers, at a conference last week (page four), Strathclyde University principal Andrew Hamnett intrigued his audience by referring to her as “Shirley” before stopping at the “T” in Temple.
In extricating himself from the near faux pas, Hamnett anticipated what some of his audience may have been thinking: “It must have been due to some Freudian holes in my mind,” he explained. Give that man a lollipop for honesty.
Semple herself intriguingly told our man on the spot that she had been called worse things in the past. Our fearsome investigative scribe probed further: “Sheila Simple” and “Shula Semple”, she revealed.
