The SQA is particularly keen for authorities to release more teachers not just to create a bigger pool, but a younger one. Only 17 per cent of markers are in the 31-40 age group, exactly half of those aged 51-60.

Among invigilators, 54 per cent are aged 61-83. But, while age may wither them, it is not as important a factor as it is for those marking papers.
