George MacBride, EIS luminary, is to retire this summer from his post as principal teacher of learning support at Govan High in Glasgow. He already knows how much he will be missed, judging by one pupil’s reaction last week.

“Sir, that’s pure heavy. You’re the only teacher that lets me go to the toilet,” she said.

Another pupil informed him that his grandfather was getting remarried at the age of 74. “If he can get married, why do you have to retire at 60?”

challenged the pupil. So much for teachers’ arguments that they should be made a special case like firefighters and the police and be allowed to retire at 55 because of the physical and mental stresses of the job.
