Robin Buss (above), a regular TES contributor for more than 25 years, died on December 16 from a brain haemorrhage. He was 67.

He began writing reviews for the paper in the early 1980s, while still a teacher at Woolwich college in south London, where he worked for 15 years.

An enthusiastic Francophile, he studied at the Sorbonne, was an authority on European cinema and translated French classic fiction, including works by Camus, Dumas and Zola.
