The iPad and cheaper Android tablets are great tools for teachers and parents, but surely the key is to focus a bit more on “direction” and a bit less on the latest “must-have” hardware and apps.
I generally agree with the idea that better tech in the classroom is a good thing. But I also suspect that Graham is creating something of a straw-man argument about the way things work in schools. He could have said similarly in 1950 that “the school library will also be their gateway to all human knowledge”.
Technology is a great tool, but it is not a panacea to solve all the problems of society and education.
“The future is already here - it’s just unevenly distributed,” as science fiction author William Gibson is said to have put it. Or, in more tedious and materialist terms, the rich private-school kids always had more books, computers and iPads than the rest.
