High Master of Manchester Grammar School Dr Martin Stephen has burst onto the literary scene with a historical novel about the Gunpowder Plot The Desperate Remedy. Jolly rip-roaring it is too, by all accounts.

But one thing is glaringly absent. “The manuscript was submitted to a judging panel consisting of my three sons,” Dr Stephen confides. “The verdict was ‘we like the novel but stick to what you know best.’” So the sex scenes were cut.
