For the first time in 12 years the Mathematical Association conference is to be held in Scotland, at the John Anderson Campus of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, from April 2-5, with the motto “Maths for the Future and Maths for Fun”. The opening session, at 2pm, is to be a talk given by Professor John Mason entitled “On being mathematical with and in front of students” and the closing talk, at 11am on Saturday, will be given by Dr Adam McBride, reader in mathematics at the University of Strathclyde. Dr McBride’s chosen topic is, somewhat cryptically, “A few of my favourite (mathematical) things”.
The time in between is packed with workshops, discussion groups and talks. As well as the opening and closing talks and the Hilary Shuard Memorial Lecture, to given by Sue Sanders, there are more than 70 other sessions covering the whole range of mathematics education both in schools and beyond. Speakers will include MA President Designate, Tony Gardiner who is performing twice and, from the University of Otago in New Zealand, Professor Derek Holton who is well known for his work on problem-solving with senior pupils.
As well as all the working sessions there are to be numerous evening activities including a Brian Bolt ice-breaking session; entertainment from the mathematical juggler, Colin Wright and a Scottish ceilidh.
