The A-level question on Macbeth in this year’s KS3 test is not a surprise, emanating as it does from the same enlightened source that gave us the literacy strategy. After all, we don’t want children to enjoy reading do we?
Still, at least you can study Macbeth with Year 9s, unlike, say, Much Ado.
But the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority will soon replace Macbeth with three plays that no one will want to read with 14-year-olds. And they and their political masters will persist with the most inane exam of modern times.
