THESE ARE ALL PICTURES OF VEHICLES

* Machines for carrying are called vehicles.

Some vehicles carry people.

A car is a vehicle.

So is a bus.

Some vehicles carry things.

A milk float is a vehicle.

So is an oil tanker.

Most vehicles have wheels and an engine.

They have a person to drive them.

DIGGERS

* This is a digger. It helps us to dig up the ground to make roads and houses.

The driver sits in the cab. He wears earmuffs. They protect his ears from the noise of his machine. The digger has a bucket at the front. The bucket scoops up the earth.

* The bucket goes up and down

* The driver pushes a lever in the cab. This makes the bucket go up and down.

* The digger has big wheels. The tyres help to grip the ground. They stop the digger from slipping in the mud.

DUSTCART

* This is a dustcart.

It carries away our rubbish.

The dustcart is big.

It has to hold a lot of rubbish.

It has a dor at the back.

The driver can open and shut it from his cab.

* At the back of the dustcart there are hooks.

The dustbin men hook the wheelie bins on to them.

The wheelie bins go up into the dustcart and tip over.

The rubbish inside them goes into the cart.

* This light flashes to warn people to stand clear.

* Inside the dustcart thereis a crushing machine.

It goes round and round.

It chews up the rubbish.

FIRE-ENGINE

* This is a fire-engine. It helps us to put out fires.

The fire-engine has a ladder. Fire-fighters use it to get into high buildings.

* A fire-engine has to get to a fire quickly. So it has flashing lights and a siren. These warn car drivers to get out of the way.

* It has a tank full of water to put out small fires.

But it takes a lot of water to put out a big fire.

Fire-fighters can get more water from pipes in the street. They run underground and they are called hydrants. All hydrants are marked with a letter H. See if you can spot hydrants along the pavement. Is there one near your school?
