The grant-maintained sector may be about to be abolished, but its heroes and heroines have not been abandoned. Among the guests at a recent reception laid on by Number 10 to reward the toilers in the field of education was Pauline Latham, the fragrant chairman of the Grant Maintained Schools Advisory Committee. It would seem Mrs Latham’s talent for one-upmanship was not impaired by almost rubbing shoulders with the powerful. She was overheard telling another guest: “I never expected to be invited here... again.”
