Education minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak plans to bring information technology to all schools by 2010. Some 85 “smart” schools will be equipped with electronic resource centres and linked to the Internet, by January 1, 1999, he said.

The ministry has put aside money to train 1,780 “master trainers” in IT who will then train a further 30,000 teachers. It also plans to develop software and courseware material appropriate to the local culture.

The plans may take longer to implement, however: 1,500 rural schools have no electricity supply.
