With collaboration between schools at the top of the agenda of the Secondary Heads Association, the election of a grammar-school head as president may come as a surprise to some.

But the man in question, Tim Andrew, head of Chesham high in Buckinghamshire, sees no problem. “At Chesham we do the normal collaborative things that all schools do,” he said.

“SHA represents heads of all types of secondary school. Anyone trying to use my election as president to say SHA supports one type of system would be wrong.”

Mr Andrew has been head of a secondary modern and an inner-city comprehensive. He aims to ensure ministers keep their promise of a new relationship with schools. “I want to focus on SHA policies, not where I work,” he said.
