As roads become more clogged, the school run has become a contentious issue.

The DfEE and the Department of Transport have stepped into the fray to support the company MapIt which has produced software for schools trying to ease traffic congestion around the school entrance.

The Map Maker Safe Routes software, which was developed with help from the Young People’s Transport Information Network and Sustrans, the sustainable transport organsation, gives students the opportunity to use Ordnance Survey maps to plot safer routes to school. Children can also mark danger points on the electronic maps.

The package comes with a manual containing plenty of suggestions on how to use the software within the curriculum.

Map Maker Safe Routes is available from MapIT, Lawrence Road, Ramsey, Huntingdon, Cambs, PE17, 1UY. Tel: 01487 813 745.
