The Tories have announced that teachers should face re-certification tests every three to five years. A spokesman said: “The quality of a child’s teacher can make or break that child’s entire education. As a society, we have a responsibility to ensure teachers have the up-to-date skills and knowledge they need to teach our kids well.”

But the idea doesn’t come from Brian Monteith, Scottish Tory education spokesman. This story is also from Canada and the words are those of Mike Harris, Ontario’s Tory Premier.

The plan beefs up the existing appraisal scheme called Teacher Supervision for Growth, involving thorough interviews and classroom observation every four to five years. Memo to Douglas Osler, senior chief inspector?
