Free multilingual wall maps of Europe are being provided to schools as part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

The European Commission’s office in the UK is making available 90,000 maps of Europe (new 2007 edition).

The maps, which are about one square metre in size, show the EU member states, the candidate countries for membership, and some basic statistical data. They are multilingual with all names of countries, cities and so on, given in their national language(s).

On that date in 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.

This proposal, known as the “Schuman declaration”, is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.
