Mars missions face threat

Britain will run out of world-leading scientists if the decline in science education continues, a space expert has warned.

Professor Colin Pillinger, who led the ill-fated Beagle 2 mission to Mars, fears that the supply of scientists needed for such projects could dry up unless the problem is addressed.

“We are a vanishing breed if we don’t have people coming through the system,” he said.
