Two years ago the Mathematical Association launched its first Primary Mathematical Challenge for primary pupils in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is a test of 25 multiple-choice problems, aimed at the top 60 per cent of pupils in English and Welsh schools Years 5 and 6, Scottish schools P6 and P7, and Years 6 and 7 in Northern Ireland.

Some 800 primary schools took part in the 2000 Challenge. The papers were marked by the schools’ teachers and gold, silver and brone certificates awarded. High-scoring pupils took the PMC Finals Challenge at their school in February, with the completed papers marked at the Mathematical Association headquarters in Leicester. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded.
