Perhaps the answer to pupils’ mathematical weaknesses lies in the genes. The last report of the Scottish Examination Board informs us that Higher biology candidates “again found difficulty in answering questions which tested mathematical abilities”. But pupils who sat Higher physics “continued to respond better to questions requiring a display of mathematical techniques”. Well, well.
