Jim Knight, the schools minister, told delegates and journalists at last week’s Association of Teachers and Lecturers conference that he was able to judge that “there was good learning going on” when he observed a maths class with 70 pupils during a visit to a Telford school.

As someone who regularly assesses teachers for qualified teacher status (QTS), I’d like to know for which of the 38 QTS standards and for which of the 41 professional standards Mr Knight saw evidence that led him to that judgement. In particular, I’d like to see his notes referring to the evidence he saw for the teacher meeting “standard 19(k)”, which refers to teachers making “effective personalised provision for those they teach”.
