Headteachers fear an exodus of Welsh maths graduates to teach in England as a result of new incentives announced by Charles Clarke, Education Secretary. From next September, trainee maths teachers in England will be able to claim an extra pound;2,000 in bursary and “golden hello” allowances, and advanced skills maths teachers could be guaranteed a minimum salary of pound;40,000 a year.
Anna Brychan, director of the National Association of Head Teachers Cymru, said: “We simply cannot afford to lose our brightest maths graduates to England where the prospects will clearly be better for them under this new scheme.”
A Welsh Assembly government spokeswoman said it was considering whether the changes will apply in Wales and would make a separate announcement.
