I am desperate to become a teacher. It is my dream to teach the subject I love, to impart my enthusiasm for English literature and the English language.
I have a first class BA in English language and literature and an MA in English literature. I am also a qualified nurse and a member of Mensa.
But the Teacher Training Agency does not require my services. I am discouraged even from applying for a PGCE. Why? Because I do not have maths GCSE. It is a senseless waste of potential.
The Government got my vote for its “education, education, education” chant. In return, I got crippling student debt and a series of useless qualifications.
Why am I just another figure in the wilderness of teacher shortages?
