What the lesson is about

Learning to tell the time can be a challenge for children, as the measurement units have not been converted to a metric system, so it can feel quite alien. This collection of “Telling the Time” resources will help them learn to tell the time and practise finding and recording intervals of time.

How to use it

To get the class started there are a number of TESiboard interactive activities, including a simple class clock where teachers can set a time and ask pupils to tell them what it is. Another task asks pupils to set a given time, and another to place the correct numbers on the different positions on a clock face.

NgfL Cymru has uploaded a useful resource comparing the hour hand to the tortoise and the minute hand to the hare, in a race around the clock face: “To make it fair, the hare has to make it back to 12 but tortoise only has to get to the next number along,” it explains.

There are also resources that compare digital clocks and watches to analogue clocks. Alwayslearning has uploaded a PowerPoint that shows the time written in a number of formats.

Pupils will find duration and sequencing events slightly more complicated, and there are a number of resources to support this. TESiboard resources include a timer that calculates how many repetitive actions (such as hops or jumps) pupils can do in a number of seconds.

There is also an activity where children can arrange the sequence of activities such as sleeping, eating dinner and putting on pyjamas by either the order in which they occur or how long they take.
