Maths makes a difference

This year’s Lasco Inter-schools Maths Challenge will take place on 3 February. Schools that participate have the chance to win a share of more than #163;4,000 worth of maths resources. The challenge is open to all schools and colleges.

What is it?

The aim of the challenge is to bring schools together using maths as a platform for pupils to collaborate and compete. Lasco, the Latin American Street Children Organisation, helps to provide education and healthcare to Latin American street children. The challenge uses mathematical problems in an aid context, encouraging pupils to consider the cost of rent against the average wage, the size of many families in poverty, the geography of South America and environmental issues such as deforestation and farming.

How is it useful?

The challenge will help pupils to develop their communication and problem-solving skills, while promoting awareness and raising money for Lasco causes. Registration is still open online.
