Money has been central to civilisation for thousands of years. An exhibition at the British Museum’s newly refurbished Citi Money Gallery, opening on 25 June, will tell its story from prehistory to the present.

What is it?

An exhibition of more than 1,000 objects from the museum’s vast collection, representing 4,000 years of history. It explains how money is coined, and the authority behind it. Exhibits include early coins such as the weighed metal used as currency in ancient Egypt, as well as the newest digital technologies like “wave and pay” mobile devices. A penny defaced by the suffragettes will also be on show; they carved the phrase “votes for women” over the top of the king’s head. Altogether, plenty to get pupils thinking.

What else?

Explore money management with your pupils during My Money Week (25 June to 1 July) using resource packs from the Personal Finance Education Group.
