SWANSEA College has appointed Maxine Room, vice-principal of Filton College, Bristol, as principal. She will be the first black female head of a further education college in Wales.

Ms Room, a specialist in equal opportunities, is responsible for curriculum development and planning at Filton. She is a graduate of Bristol University, and has more than 24 years’ experience of teaching a variety of subjects in FE including management, health and social care and sociology.

She was born in Hackney, east London.
