Mekanimals is a book with four chunky double-page spreads. Each has a brightly coloured picture of an elaborate robot-like minibeast, designed by Professor Coggles. Within their bodies readers, aged five upwards, can set a pair of gear-wheels, selected from a set of three. As the gears turn, things happen: the bee’s wings flap, the spider’s mandibles twitch, the butterfly’s tongue flickers and the snail uncoils. There is a lot of intriguing activity for little fingers and an implicit lesson about ratios.

Mekanimals costs pound;9.99 and is published by Poppy Red.
