James Bond fan David Ritchie was so disappointed with the latest Bond movie, that he wrote a review panning Quantum of Solace.

And the Penicuik High S4 pupil’s 250-word critique was so good it won him the title of UK Young Film Critic of the Year 2009, as part of the BAFTA awards.

The winner’s school also receives a free film screening and a free film education training day for one of its teachers.

Meanwhile, a short animated film by students from Dundee, The Happy Duckling, won a Bafta Scotland prize for best animation, at the awards ceremony in the Glasgow Science Centre on Sunday. The nine-minute film, which tells the story of a duck that learns you have to be cruel to be kind, was written and directed by a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Gili Dolev.

Production took place at the college’s media labs and Abertay’s White Space studios. Mr Dolev, originally from Israel, collaborated with eight animation students from Dundee and Abertay universities on the project. An original score was provided by Dundee-born composer Mick Cooke, of the band Belle and Sebastian.

The film was premiered at Dundee Contemporary Arts during last year’s Discovery Film Festival for children and young people. It has been screened in almost 50 countries.
