It was a very balanced article. It’s difficult for me to grasp that persons with attentional problems are labelled as mentally ill with a neurological disorder. It’s absurd, and it seems we are quite quick to medicalise behaviours. Some extraordinary cases exist, with head banging and lack of impulse control, but those are the exceptions, not the rule.

When we were faced with this challenge for our son, Alex, we decided to try a cognitive and memory training and behaviour shaping course instead. It’s called Play Attention. They were using it at our school, so we tried it and it resulted in him getting good grades, friends and so on.

We were also instructed on changing our parenting. We used consistency and structure to manage our home environment. We used another online programme called ADHD Nanny to help with this. There are countless programmes available and it’s a difficult road. Parents have to take this on as no one else will do it for us.
