Having dealt with such children and families, I’m an advocate for using the correct dosage of the drugs. The most important benefit is that the children learn what it feels like to be in control of their own behaviour.
One caution about the parenting issue: there does seem to be a genetic component. Disorganised parents are those least likely to be able to maintain the kind of disciplined routine needed for the behavioural approach. In my experience they’re often unable even to remember to give the medication reliably.
