Lucy, 21, from Inverness, is studying for a BEd in primary education at Jordanhill College, Strathclyde University.

I want to become a teacher because... kids make me smile so much. It is a really important job The biggest inspiration at school was... the teachers. I really enjoyed primary school. It was a really happy time with lots of good teachers. I still go back to visit them.

The most exciting thing that’s happened so far is... on my first year placement I got thrown in at the deep end in a socially deprived area. The children responded and learnt.

I can’t wait I to have my own classroom and to inspire the kids as I was inspired.

But I’m dreading... being in that classroom with the door shut by myself.

I would like my first job to be... near home to begin with. I may teach abroad in the future.

I’ll know I’m a teacher when... my class sits down and the door closes. And when the sign on the door says ‘Welcome to Miss Swanson’s Class’.

If I wasn’t going into teaching I’d be... working with children, doing something that benefits others.

This evening I’m... studying, as I do every evening. Fourth year is really hectic, really loaded with work.

If I were education minister I would... review the curriculum. There is too much to be covered in too little time. I would also make sure each child could fulfil their potential.
