A teacher and parent governor have been accused of risking the lives of 13 primary children. Teacher Melanie Rankin, 26, and Philip Ramsden, 41, both deny obstructing a train and endangering the safety of passengers and their pupils in June 1999. The pair led the group, from Fairway primary in Sockport across and along the main railway line at Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria.

Headteacher Lynn Boyle, 42, who approved the route, denies two charges of aiding and abetting the endangerment and obstruction. The case was continuing at Preston crown court, as The TES went to press.
