Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the institute, announced this week that the fund stands at Pounds 52,000. The first meeting of the trust will be held on January 16. Its members are Esther Mayor (Gwen Mayor’s daughter), Claire McLeod (a colleague at Dunblane primary) and officers of the EIS, of which Mrs Mayor was a member.
The money collected will be used for artistic, cultural, musical and sporting projects to benefit primary schools. Mrs Mayor had a particular interest in music.
Mr Smith said: “Teachers and lecturers throughout Scotland and south of the border have contributed generously in the first phase of the appeal and there have been many contributions from teachers and teacher organisations overseas. We have recently written again to all educational establishments in Scotland as we hope very much to increase this figure substantially.” The trust will probably want to spend only accrued interest on its projects.
Mr Smith also said that the EIS had continued to provide support for Dunblane primary and Mrs Mayor’s family through legal representation at the Cullen inquiry and through the work of its area officer.
