Sony has announced a new super-sized memory card format called Memory Stick Pro. The card is about the size of a stick of chewing gum but its capacity is huge. The company plans to offer three memory sizes, including one that stores 1Gb of data, roughly the same amount you can get on 1,000 floppy disks. This means it can store almost 400 high-quality JPEG images or 24 minutes of DVD-quality video. Impressive stuff, but don’t rush just out - the 1Gb card will give little or no change out of pound;800. But prices will fall and memory cards could one day replace tape and disks as the standard storage format.
