A merger to form a new union in higher education was announced last week after 98 per cent of the members voting opted for the change. The Association of University Teachers represents mostly older universities. The Association of University and College Lecturers is dominated by the former polytechnics. The merger takes place on September 1.

The college lecturers’ union NATFHE will decide whether to join the pair and form a single union for higher education later this year.
