Donald Gorrie, the Liberal Democrats’ one-man dissenting voice, was on the usual conference party political panel at the weekend, in his case at the Association of Scottish Colleges. We thought we were in for the usual treat when, following Lifelng Learning Minister Henry McLeish, he began “you heard the official coalition line from Henry . . .”

Alas, he simply added: “I didn’t hear him, so I can’t disagree with him.” Outbreak of severe disappointment on the press bench.
