MICK Jagger, once the ultimate anti-authoritarian icon of teenage rebellion, returned to his old school yesterday to open a pound;2.25 million centre for performing arts named in his honour.
The Rolling Stones singer attended Dartford grammar school between 1954 and 1961 and left with seven O-levels and two A-levels. He has not been back to the school since he left but said he was proud and honoured to be associated with the Mick Jagger Centre.
“If we had enjoyed a facility like this t would have made a fantastic difference. We used to practise in bedrooms and garden sheds. The centre will be a focus for young people to develop new ideas and experiment,” he said. The facility, which was built with pound;1.6m lottery funding and money raised by the school, including a substantial donation from the pop star, contains a recording studio, performance space, practice suites and a bar and cafe.
