A Mighty Girl, one of the world’s largest girl-empowerment websites, is running a month-long campaign during Women’s History Month, which started on 1 March, to educate and inspire young people about women’s history.

The campaign, entitled Mighty Girl Heroes: Inspiring the next generation of history makers, provides teachers with resources to make this history easily accessible to today’s youngsters.

As co-founder Carolyn Danckaert says: “Our Mighty Girl Heroes project is about making women’s history accessible and compelling to today’s kids. It’s our hope that learning about these remarkable women will inspire girls to become the history-makers of tomorrow.”

A Mighty Girl’s online collection of biographies of famous women has been vastly expanded and includes over 400 books.

A daily profile piece on a significant woman in history is also being featured: this includes such figures as Burmese democracy activist and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi, former First Lady and human rights advocate Eleanor Roosevelt, British palaeontologist Mary Anning, civil rights activist Claudette Colvin and architect Julia Morgan.

Each profile includes biographical details about the featured individual and information on youth-oriented books, films and other resources that can be used to teach young people about them.

The initiative also includes the release today - International Women’s Day (8 March) - of four profiles of important women from around the world: The Suffragists, which offers a look at the figures behind the women’s rights movement; Ten Women You Should Know But Don’t, a profile of several remarkable but largely unknown individuals; and The Best in Historical Fiction Starring Girls and Women, which is an overview of the best historical fiction for child and teenage readers.

Each article will also feature reading recommendations that are geared toward younger readers.
