Mike Tomlinson, head of the inquiry into 14 to 19 education, told MPs this week that GCSE marking should take account of pupils’ writing and arithmetic skills. The former chief inspector told a House of Commons select committee that employers could not tell whether pupils with good GCSEs had basic skills’ understanding.
