Readers will recall Jotter’s rigorous scrutiny of those who really run Scottish education, kicking off with Bart McGettrick, who combines a bewildering number of jobs with his principalship of St Andrew’s College.

Another candidate from the inner circle must surely be David Miller. This chum of Michael Forsyth’s chairs both the Scottish Examination Board and the Scottish Vocational Education Council. We must not, of course, forget his chairmanship of Stirling University court or his depute chairmanship of Forth Valley Enterprise. Not to mention his membership of the Advisory Scottish Council on Education and Training Targets.

Miller has also been pressed into service as vice-chairman of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, director of Edinburgh Academy and commissioner of Queen Victoria School, Dunblane.

Oops, we almost neglected to mention his day job: chairman of the Wolverhampton and Dudley brewery company.
