Children in schools with a high level of pupil turnover are only marginally behind their peers in more stable schools.
Government-backed researchers examined the effect of pupil turnover between Year 3 and Year 6 on those children who have been at the same school since Year 1. They found that children in a class with 10 per cent annual turnover are only a week or two behind those whose cohort is entirely stable.
Pupils moving short distances between schools are the least disruptive to their classmates, regardless of whether they are crossing local authority boundaries. Pupils arriving in September are far less disruptive than those who join later in the year.
