A MERGER between the leading school curriculum and technology bodies has been cleared by ministers, although a final decision rests with the Scottish parliament.

Helen Liddell, the Education Minister, announced the setting up of a merger action group which will report by September 15. The Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum and the Scottish Council for Educational Technology both welcomed the decision.

Consultations have been taking place since October and more than 80 responses have been received. There was unanimous approval for integrating the development of curriculum and IT materials for schools, and majority support for advice on the curriculum and IT to be provided by one body.

Mrs Liddell said: “There is a continuing need for independent advice and the development of materials relating to both the curriculum and ICT.”
