A competition for 11 to 15-year-olds has been launched by the Government to promote its European Union presidency which begins on January 1. The Ambassador for a Day competition was launched by Baroness Blackstone, the education minister, and Doug Henderson, the minister for Europe, at Deptford Green school in New Cross, south London.

Prizes include spending a day running a fashion house in Milan or managing Barcelona football club. Entrants must answer three questions about the EU and say what they would do if chosen to be an ambassador.

* All schools will be sent an applications pack in the New Year. Further information from: Ambassador for a Day competition, EUD(P), Foreign Commonwealth Office, London SW1A 2AH.
