I was surprised to read your correspondent’s account of Mr Woodhead’s remarks at the recent meeting of the Parliamentary Select Committee (TES, May 24).

I certainly do accept that I had a chance to put my case concerning the misleading changes made to the text of the annual report consequent on the decision to reinterpret the meaning of the mid-point on the seven-point scale. I was sent a copy of the draft containing those changes. I did minute my misgivings, but I was never invited to any meeting to debate the issue and I was never informed of senior management’s decision to persist in publishing a report based on that highly dubious interpretation.

I have no doubt that Mr Woodhead knew all of these facts.
