Sometimes teachers can’t cope: they have had enough. “Jonowen” in The TES Scotland online staffroom is one such, having coming across so many young teachers complaining about the start to their careers.

Heshe tells them: “I hope to goodness that this moaning, groaning, self-pitying yelping doesn’t go on every year on these boards. I’ve only been on here for a few months, so don’t know what it was like this time last year. To the grown-ups amongst us, we know that this is life and we’ve all got 100s of T-shirts to prove it.

“There seem to be two camps at the moment - us and the spoilt brats who think everything should be handed to them on a plate. I am utterly sick of their childish whining on+on+on about not getting a proper job, too many teachers and not enough posts.

“In Highland, we have a shortage of most subjects because most of the little darlings want to stay close to their friends and the big city lights.

“But hey, I might start putting people off again so I’ll shut up and start my afternoon’s teaching. Congratulations to those probationers who have jobs in out-of-the-way places and apologies for all the criticism of your peers - but they do need to grow up.”
