THE Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said that mobile phones have been instrumental in at least 12 road deaths this year.

A coroner warned of dangers of their use after the death of Rebecca Staker, 14, who stepped into the path of a car while on the phone to her boyfrind.

Childwise, a market research agency that studies young consumers, found that a quarter of teenagers now own a mobile phone. Pay-as-you-go cards and the use of phones for safety reasons, as a “remote childminder”, by busy parents were the main causes of increased use.
