Crossing the equator

Most pupils are offered a school trip to Paris or Berlin, while a lucky few may get to visit the US. But students from Tong High School in Bradford have recently returned from a far more exciting adventure as part of their link-up with Masaka Secondary School in Uganda.

What is it?

Organised as part of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms scheme, pupils and teachers took lessons in the Ugandan school, allowing them to share innovative teaching methods and experiences while enriching their own cultural knowledge.

Year 12 students Asad Khan, Aqib Khan and Connor Clancy supported classes with up to 90 children, managed sports training and led A-level revision sessions across a range of subjects. Asad says that the trip was a “real eye-opener” and has made him certain that he wants to become a teacher.

The scheme is useful for: learning new languages; finding out about the customs and culture of other countries; getting involved in global citizenship; creating joint partnerships and teamwork; and developing cultural awareness.
