Financial considerations must not be the primary reason for closing small and rural schools, education and lifelong learning minister Jane Davidson has told Welsh Assembly members. But surplus school places in Wales must be tackled, she said, during questions last week. Welsh schools might be funded over three years rather than the current 12 months, from 2007-8, as a result of enabling clauses in the Education Bill currently before the Westminster parliament.
